The Skin Boutique have been offering their expertise and explained how the “Samantha Jones” style peels are no longer around as people don’t want the down-time anymore.
“Most chemical peels come from natural sources – glycolic acid comes from sugar cane, lactic acid is sourced from sour milk and an enzymatic peel is papaya and pumpkin so they don’t sound as scary when you know what the actual ingredients are. There is an ingredient called hyaluronic acid and that does no harm at all to skin – people just get afraid when they hear the word “acid”.
So what does a peel do?
They are exfoliating – taking away the top layers of dead skin. This is skin that needs to be removed because if you don’t remove it, you’ll have dull, grey skin. It won’t make the skin thinner. It actually stimulates the healing process – produces new collagen and elastin and in turn, regenerates for brighter, fresher looking skin
What conditions can peels treat?
So many conditions – you can get a really mild peel or deep peels. They brighten the skin, can treat acne, acne scarring, pigmentation like sun spots and sun damage, and are also great for anti-ageing, treating lines and wrinkles
Is there much down-time?
It really depends on the strength of the peel you using. If you are getting a particularly strong peel, your beauty therapist will have prepared you for this. You can’t just walk in off the street and go for a strong peel – no clinic will do that for you. You need to build up to a deep peel as your skin needs to be prepped using a product we will be using in the treatment. For a typical Image peel, you might be slightly red for 24 hours or less in some cases and you may have some flaking on the skin for a few days after (some dry skin usually around the nose where there was a build-up of skin or in a sensitive area). It’s extremely mild though and doesn’t happen for anyone
How many peels will I need?
4-6 peels depending on your skin concern. We would usually recommend a course of 4 and after-care is very important. We give you a post-treatment kit to bring home which contains a cleanser and moisturizer so you stop using all your other products and only use the kit for a week after treatment. This repairs your skin straight after your peel
How far apart should you get a peel on a course?
Once a month is ideal
