Paris Jackson has opened up about the moment she decided to speak at her father Michael Jackson’s memorial service when she was just 11 years old.
The actress and musician recalled the emotional moment during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast this week.
Michael Jackson died aged 50 in June 2009, with a public memorial service held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles just weeks later.
Paris, who was 11 at the time, said she had not planned to speak at the service.
Instead, she said the decision happened spontaneously while she was on stage with her family.
“It kind of just happened in the moment. It was kind of like... it happened on stage,” Paris recalled.
She explained that her family had looked around and wondered whether one of Michael’s three children would say something.
“No one moved, so I was like, ‘F*** it. We ball.’ Yeah, it just happened,” she said.

Paris is the middle child of Michael Jackson’s three children, with older brother Prince and younger brother Bigi.
Looking back, she described the experience as an “energetic initiation”, given that much of her life since then has involved being in front of microphones and cameras.
However, Paris admitted she has never gone back to watch footage of herself speaking at the memorial.
When asked whether she felt pressure in the moment, she said it felt as though somebody had to step forward.
“I have not gone back to watch it to see how quickly it all happened, but it felt like it happened very slowly,” she explained."
“It felt like someone’s got to say something. Little bro is not going to do it. Older bro is not moving. Alright.”

Paris has previously spoken about the complicated relationship she has had with being publicly connected to her famous father.
Earlier this year, she said she once felt that she “owed it to people” to publicly share details about her bond with Michael.
She explained that she used to post personal memories of her father on occasions such as his birthday, Father’s Day and the anniversary of his death.
However, her attitude towards sharing those memories publicly has changed in recent years.

Paris said she now understands that she is “allowed to be private” about her relationship with her late father.
“I’m now like, my relationship is the most beautiful relationship ever,” she previously said.
“I’m in a very beautiful spot with my dad and I love that and it’s no one’s business and I don’t have to share that with anybody.”
She added that keeping that part of her life private has given her a sense of freedom.
Paris has continued to build her own career in music and acting, while also occasionally reflecting on her childhood and the impact of losing her father at such a young age.

Paris also opened up about her struggles with addiction and revealed she is now in her seventh year of sobriety.
The performer said she has always had what she describes as an “addictive personality”, explaining that much of her behaviour during her addiction came from a desire to “experience everything”.
“I wanted to grow up fast,” she said.
“There was something in me that wanted to live as much life as possible and I think that maybe contributed to some poor choices in my young adulthood life.”
Paris has previously spoken publicly about her past heroin use and the challenges she faced with addiction.
She explained that, for her, using recreational drugs or alcohol could potentially lead her back to heroin.
“For example, I’m the type of person if I have a hit of weed or drink I’m going to go back on heroin,” she said.
“I know some other people who messed around with heroin and now they can have a drink at a party or they can do MDMA at a festival. I don’t know what that is.”

Paris said her addictive tendencies are not limited to drugs and alcohol either.
“I think everyone’s maybe different, but I am just of the variety that is, I will turn Pilates into an addiction. I will turn rock climbing into an addiction,” she explained.
“I just had a graspiness with everything. I have that addictive personality where I will be reachy and graspy and find ways to get into consuming relationships with all things.”
She revealed her search for coping mechanisms began when she was "7, 8, 9" years old. "Wether it was a person or food, just survival skills I would say. It's kind of always been present, this idea of 'I need something to manage.'"

She said she has since learned to approach her relationships with other people, activities and even herself differently.
“I just constantly, historically reach outside of myself to find things to change or manage how I’m thinking and feeling,” Paris said.
She explained that she now tries to consider what it means to have a healthy relationship with herself.
Paris acknowledged that she still has some habits she considers consuming, saying she currently has a “consuming relationship” with tobacco.
However, she said her focus is now on finding a healthier balance in the way she relates to the things around her.
Paris described her sixth year of sobriety as the “happiest” year of her life, and she is now approaching seven years without using heroin.
