Virgin Media Television (VMTV) will broadcast a major new Virgin Media News documentary, Policing Dublin City, on Tuesday, 25 August at 9pm on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media PLAY.
The one-hour special sees Virgin Media News Crime Correspondent Paul Quinn join members of An Garda Síochána on the frontline to gain a unique insight into the day-to-day realities of policing Ireland’s capital.
Through a series of 'ride-alongs' across Dublin, the documentary captures first-hand the range of incidents, pressures and complex social problems Gardaí encounter while carrying out their duties. From public order incidents and antisocial behaviour to addiction, homelessness and crime, Policing Dublin City provides an unfiltered look at the challenges facing those policing the city’s streets.
However, the programme also explores the wider social issues behind many of the incidents Gardaí are called to deal with, problems that cannot always be solved through policing alone. It examines the close relationship between addiction, homelessness and crime, and the difficult balance Gardaí must strike when supporting vulnerable individuals while also protecting public safety.
The documentary also turns its attention to youth crime and antisocial behaviour, asking what factors can lead some young people towards offending. It considers the importance of early intervention, education, youth services and community supports in helping to prevent crime before it develops.
A key theme of the programme is the difference between public perception and reality. Concerns about crime and personal safety in Dublin have become increasingly prominent in public debate, but Policing Dublin City asks whether the perception of a capital becoming increasingly unsafe accurately reflects what is happening on the ground.
President of the Garda Representative Association, Niall Hodgins, speaks about the growing demands being placed on frontline Gardaí. He points to increased street crime, thefts and assaults, including attacks on Garda members themselves, while highlighting concerns around Garda numbers and population growth.
Meanwhile, Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon reflects on the wider challenges facing Dublin. While describing the city as one he loves and one of great beauty, he argues that Dublin has also been let down and requires greater attention and support to address the problems affecting its communities.
Combining frontline access with political and social perspectives, Policing Dublin City offers a detailed examination of the pressures facing Gardaí and the wider issues affecting life in the capital.
