Six men have been taken to hospital after being found inside a shipping container at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford this morning.

Emergency services were alerted after one of the men inside the container made a distress call.

The container was on board a ship travelling to Rosslare when the call was received.

Gardaí and members of the National Ambulance Service were dispatched to the port ahead of the vessel's arrival.

When the ship docked at Rosslare Europort, it was searched and the six men were discovered inside one of the containers.

All six were taken to Wexford General Hospital for medical assessment and treatment.

It's understood four of the men have since been discharged, while two remain in hospital receiving treatment.

Ger Carthy, Operations Resource Manager with the National Ambulance Service in Wexford, said two ambulances and three response teams were sent to the scene.

He said the men were found in a distressed condition when emergency crews reached them.

"They were in a distressed state," he said.

Mr Carthy said the men may have spent up to three days inside the container.

"They might have been in the container for up to three days," he said.

The circumstances surrounding how the men came to be inside the container are being investigated.

Gardaí are continuing to make enquiries following the discovery at Rosslare Europort.
