Killary Fjord in Co Galway has been named among the world’s best travel experiences in Lonely Planet’s 2027 Best in Travel list.
The fjord is one of 50 destinations selected for the latest edition of the travel guide, which showcases a collection of what it describes as unforgettable locations around the world.
Lonely Planet said Killary Fjord is a strong contender for the most breathtaking place in Ireland, highlighting its steep peaks and dramatic changes in scenery throughout the seasons.
Tourism Ireland has welcomed the recognition, saying the inclusion of Killary Fjord is a superb endorsement of the area and the wider Connemara region.
The tourism agency said the accolade reflects the unique appeal of the area as a destination for overseas visitors.
It said visitors can experience breathtaking scenery and rich history, while also having the opportunity to slow down and spend time in nature.
Other destinations featured in Lonely Planet’s 2027 Best in Travel list include Quebec and Prince Edward Island in Canada, León in Spain, and St Cuthbert’s Way, a walking route stretching from the Scottish Borders to Northumberland in England.
Killary Fjord is one of Ireland’s best-known natural landmarks and is surrounded by mountains, woodlands and coastal scenery.
