Six counties are subject to a Status Orange alert. Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford entered the warning period at 6am, with the alert scheduled to end at 10am.
The wider Status Yellow warning began at 4am and affects 20 counties in total. The alert covers all of Leinster and Munster, along with Cavan and Monaghan, and is due to remain in place until 11am.
According to Met Éireann, some areas could experience heavy, thundery rain and strong, blustery conditions. These conditions may make journeys more challenging, particularly where visibility is reduced or roads become affected by surface water.
Localised flooding is another possible impact of the rainfall, which could result in delays for commuters and other road users.
Coastal parts of southern and southeastern Ireland may also experience wave overtopping. The risk is being increased by the combination of spring tides, surge and strong winds blowing towards the shore.
Anyone travelling during the warning period should be prepared for slower journeys and difficult conditions, particularly in areas experiencing the heaviest rainfall.
