Galway gardaí are seeking help from any members of the public who may have information or footage regarding a sexual assault that occurred in the city last weekend.

A young woman is said to have been left "extremely traumatised" in the aftermath of what gardaí are describing as "a very serious case."

The woman was enjoying a night out with friends on Saturday, August 7th. At around 11.45pm she became separated from her friends while in the Woodquay area. She was approached by a man who was unknown to her.

The man engaged in conversation with the woman before sexually assaulting her at a nearby car wash. The assault lasted for approximately 30 minutes.

Gardaí have subsequently established a special incident room to co-ordinate their investigation.

Detectives from the Protective Services Bureau and the Crime Division have combined and are working together to examine CCTV from the Woodquay area.

Gardaí are now appealing for anyone with mobile phone or dash cam footage from the Woodquay area between 11.45pm on Saturday August 7th and 12.15am on Sunday August 8th, to come forward. They can be contacted on 091 538000 at Mill Street Station or on the confidential Garda number of 1800 666111.
