UHG Has Nation’s Highest Number of COVID ICU Patients

University Hospital Galway currently has more COVID patients in the ICU than any other hospital in the country.

The latest figures released on Tuesday night show nine patients in UHG's ICU, more than twice the number in any other hospital. In total the hospital has 13 confirmed cases of COVID. There are also a further six suspected cases.

Elsewhere in the county, Portiuncula Hospital has five cases, with two patients in ICU and one suspected case.

In Ireland there is a total of 230 confirmed COVID cases in hospitals, with 54 in ICU.

Galway's incidence rate is significantly above the national average. The county has 617 cases per 100,000 people while the national average is 482.

COVID testing centres in Galway are currently experiencing a surge in activity, with the public being advised to pre-book any tests. The Forster Street and Carnmore testing centres are experiencing high levels of activity in recent weeks.
