The number of COVID patients being treated at University Hospital Galway has dropped sharply.

As of Monday night UHG had 13 COVID patients, a decrease of six in 24 hours.

Five of these patients are in the ICU, the second highest number in the country after Dublin's Mater hospital where six patients are currently in the ICU.

Last week UHG had the nation's highest number of COVID patients at 19.

There is no change in the numbers at Ballinasloe's Portiuncula Hospital, which has four confirmed COVID cases. None of these patients are in the ICU.

As of Monday night there are 184 confirmed cases of COVID among patients in Irish hospitals. 34 are in the ICU.

The Delta variant continues to be the most transmissible strain.
