Spice Girl Mel B has revealed that her "abusive" marriage could have rendered her true self "dead and gone".

The singer whose real name is Melanie Brown, married film producer Stephen Belafonte in 2007. Their marriage ended in 2017, amid allegations of emotional and physical abuse made against her ex husband, which Belafonte has always denied.

The former couple welcomed their only child in 2011, when Mel B gave birth to their daughter Madison Brown Belafonte.

Mel B who announced her engagement to partner Rory McPhee last October, has joined the cast of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, an extreme endurance show, in a bid to "face her fears" after her toxic marriage to Belafonte, which led to her cutting off contact with her family from 2008 to 2014.

Mel B also revealed that drugs became a means of escape from her toxic marriage, a source of refuge and way to “block out the torment and the guilt”.

“I ended up being in a very horrible abusive 10-year relationship. I felt worthless, you feel helpless. I'm facing huge fears", Mel B explained. "I’m just going to bring out that inner person that I hope isn't dead and gone".

Mel B has been outspoken about PTSD, which she suffered from at the hands of a financially and physically abusive marriage, according to the star.

"I wanted to literally physically scrape myself clean of my abusive ex-partner, but it’s harder to scrape away the memories and start to repair the emotional damage", she said in an interview last year.

Scary Spice was awarded an MBE for her work with domestic violence charity Women's Aid. She starred in a film highlighting the issue in 2021.
