Brendan O'Carroll Breaks Silence Following Backlash Over Tyler Perry Comments

Brendan O'Carroll has had his say on the criticism he has received over comments he made about Tyler Perry's colour during his appearance on The One Show.

Mrs Brown's Boys star O'Carroll has been accused by viewers of making an "incredibly racist remark" towards the American actor and director Tyler Perry. 

Appearing via video link, Brendan O'Carroll was asked whether he could see Tyler ever appearing on his comedy show.

Speaking to hosts Harvey Judd and Lauren Laverne, O'Carroll had said, "So far we haven’t had anyone of his colour in there so I don't know if we could have him in". 

"But you know what, I'd love that, but I think more importantly I'd love to do another movie with him". 

Speaking in a new interview, comedian O'Carroll said that people should "lighten up" following the backlash. "It's very difficult to tell a gag without offending somebody", he said. 

"I was doing a radio interview once and this guy phoned in who happened to be gay, homosexual. He said that he found jokes about homosexuals offensive. I said 'it's very difficult to tell a joke about homosexuals or Irish people or English people without offending somebody'". 

"I asked him 'you tell me a joke that you would find acceptable to homosexuals. He said 'two homosexuals mug a woman in a lane, one held her down and the other did her hair', which he found hilarious", O'Carroll continued. "I said 'holding a woman is not funny, number one and number two not all homosexuals are hairdressers and not all hairdressers are homosexual'". 

Tyler Perry also had his say on the matter, "I think it is a very scary place if everybody wants censorship if they say something that somebody else doesn't agree with, or if they use a word that somebody else finds offensive".
