Jeremy Clarkson is to remain as host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire "for the moment", despite his "awful" comments regarding Meghan Markle in his recent Sun article, according to ITV boss Kevin Lygo.

This comes after the former Top Gear presenter wrote in his column that he would be "dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her", claiming "everyone who's my age thinks the same way".

This article resulted in major backlash from Clarkson's daughter Emma, along with Carol Vorderman and Jason Manford among others.

Responding to criticism, Clarkson tweeted, "Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it".

"In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people", he added. "I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future".

"It was awful"

Managing director for ITV studios Kevin Lygo insisted that the broadcaster has no say in what Clarkson writes in his columns, adding that he will remain as host for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? for now.

"I would say what he writes in a newspaper column… We have no control over what he says", Lygo said. "We hire him as a consummate broadcaster of the most famous quiz on television, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?".

"So it’s not quite in our wheelhouse but I don’t know what he was thinking when he wrote that. It was awful".

Asked if Clarkson will be kept as host by ITV, Lygo also added, "Yes, at the moment we are".

Jeremy Clarkson replaced Christ Tarrant as host of the ITV gameshow in 2018.

Yesterday morning, the UK Independant Press Standards Organisation revealed Clarkson's article has received a record number of complaints.
