Nicolas Cage has paid tribute to his ex wife Lisa Marie Presley.

The couple began dating in 2001, and having briefly split up in early 2002, they got back together, before marrying in August of that same year. However three months later, Cage filed for divorce, which was eventually finalised in 2004.

The only daughter of music legend Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie died on Thursday (January 12) after being rushed to hospital, having suffered a cardiac arrest at her Calabasas home. She was 54 years old.

“This is devastating news", the actor said in a statement. "Lisa had the greatest laugh of anyone I ever met. She lit up every room, and I am heartbroken. I find some solace believing she is reunited with her son Benjamin".

Lisa Marie Presley's last public appearance came a few days at this year's Golden Globes Awards, where she attended the ceremony alongside her mother Priscilla. They were celebrating the Baz Luhrman biopic Elvis, starring Austin Butler.
