Shane MacGowan has heaped the praise NFL star Travis Kelce for his cover of the Pogues' festive classic, 'Fairytale Of New York'.

Kelce who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, and dating US popstar Taylor Swift, recorded the track with his brother Jason Kelce.

The pair recorded this track for the Philadelphia Eagles' Christmas Album, the club which Jason plays for, while changing some of the lyrics.

Described by the brothers as “as a tale of two brothers whose love for each other withstands the test of time”, it has already hit number one on iTunes.

"knocked out"

The latest cover of 'Fairytale Of New York', has gone down well with Irish music legend Shane MacGowan. The former Pogues singer shared a clip via social media, adding, “Tell them I am knocked out".

MacGowan's wife Victoria Mary Clarke also praise Kelce's rendition, sharing a video of the athlete in the studio, adding the caption, “Well done".

This comes after Victoria Mary Clarke had previously thanked fans for their kind messages of support, as her husband Shane remains in hospital, undergoing treatment for viral encephalitis, an illness which causes swelling in the brain.

“Just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who has been messaging me and @ShaneMacGowan and thank you @spiderstacy and Terry Woods for coming to visit him love and prayers for everyone who is struggling right now. Hang in there!", Clarke posted earlier this week.

Since being admitted to hospital, Shane MacGowan has been visited by Bruce Springsteen, Bono and the Edge, Daniel O’Donnell and Damien Dempsey.
