A teenager has been arrested following an attack that left a pensioner hospitalised.

At approximately 9.30 pm on Tuesday night a group of men broke into a shed at a property in Adrass Lower, Celbridge, Kildare.

While the men were attempting to remove items from the shed they were disturbed by its owner, a 72-year-old man.

"The owner of the shed, who is 72-years-old, disturbed these men and was assaulted," a garda spokesperson said.

The victim was taken to Blanchardstown's Connolly hospital, where he is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Gardaí say several suspects fled the scene on foot while another fled on a scrambler bike, which had been stolen from the shed.

Following a subsequent search, gardaí arrested a teenager, who is currently detained at Leixlip garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Gardaí are appealing to any person who may have information in relation to this incident to come forward," a garda spokesperson said. "Any person who may have noticed any unusual activity in the Adrass Lower area last night is asked to make contact with investigating Gardaí. Any road users who were travelling in Adrass Lower between 9p.m. and 10p.m. and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí."

Gardaí have asked anyone with information to contact Leixlip Garda Station on 01 666 7800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
