A coroner has confirm that Emmerdale star Andy Devine died from an accidental fall. He was 79 years old.

The actor, whose real name was Peter Devine played Shadrach Dingle in the soap. His character was dramatically killed off  in 2010, as part of an alcohol abuse storyline. He first appeared in Emmerdale in 2000, as Sharach Dingle husband of Faith and father of Chas.

Devine had several other TV roles including Doctor Who, Queer As Folk, and even having a brief stint in Coronation Street in 1960.

It was reported that Devine "lost his balance resulting in a fall" and died in Southport Hospital back in January.

"He was unable to get up until his carers arrived to assist him which was about an hour later", Sefton Senior Coroner Julia Goulding said in a statement.

"Peter had a significant number of serious underlying clinical co-morbidities and not withstanding all appropriate care and treatment, Peter's condition deteriorated culminating in his death".

Devine's medical cause of death was "hospital acquired pneumonia".

Liam O'Brien who played Ethan Blake in Emmerdale led the tributes to Devine.

"Even sadder that he passed in January and never knew. I was by the sea now when heard the news and Andy Devine was a sailor through and through", O'Brien wrote. "Gods rest ye pal. Second star to the right. Straight on 'til morning".

Four Lives actor Daniel Jillings also paid tribute to Devine.

"Such sad news! Often thought about Andy, he was my first drama teacher and a great one. A character both on and off screen".
