John Cleese has issued a somewhat sarcastic "apology" statement after confirming his Fawlty Towers reboot.

The comedian recently announced a reboot of the popular British sitcom, which will see him star alongside his daughter Camilla Cleese in a remake which will “explore how Cleese’s over-the-top, cynical and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern world”.

The remake will focus on the relationship between Cleese and his daughter, as they try to manage a hotel together, while John Cleese attempts to navigate his way through the modern world.

Responding to the divisive reaction to this remake on social media, Cleese wrote this.

“I must apologise. I had no idea that the idea of writing a new sitcom with my daughter would cause so much anger and distress", Cleese tweeted. “I truly meant no harm. Naively I thought it might be fun. But I feel terrible about having released this tide of negative emotion. Please forgive me".

John Cleese starred in the original sitcom, which ran from 1975 to 1979, featuring the late Andrew Sachs as Spanish waiter Manuel, alongside Connie Booth and Prunella Scales.
