You might complain how you’ve been on the same salary for years and you’re always broke but have you actually done anything to change the situation? Asking for a pay rise can be daunting but sometimes its like pulling off that plaster! It just has to be done and the sooner you do it, the better.  Bearing this in mind though, we do have some advice on how best to handle it

  • Make sure the timing is right.  There is no point in asking for more money if you’ve heard the company you are working with are struggling.  Your boss probably doesn’t have time to meet with you on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon so it may be a waste of time popping into their office at those times.  Instead of springing it on them, book in a meeting
  • Be sure that you deserve the pay rise and you have proof to back this up.  What have you achieved since your last pay rise?  Have you taken on more duties? Have you exceeded your targets?
  • The worst thing you can do is compare your salary to a colleague’s salary – you might feel hard done by but don’t let this show.  Be professional
  • It’s probably not a good idea to say you’ll leave if you don’t get what you want – unless you are prepared to follow-through.  Your boss may accept your resignation instead of negotiating a better salary
  • You don’t have to accept the offer they make – you can take time to think about it to make sure you’re happy with it.  Let’s face it – it could be another couple of years before you approach them again about another salary review
  • When you agree on an amount, ensure your contract is amended to reflect your new salary
