Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have written their names in Irish Olympic folklore after securing Ireland's first ever gold medal for rowing.

Despite trailing by 1.4 seconds early on, Ireland recovered to ultimately see off germany by 0.86 of a second by the finish. Germany finished in second, while Italy finished with the Bronze medal in third.

A magnificent achievement for the pair.

This was their reaction afterwards.

Yesterday, Siobhan Haughey secured a medal in the swimming while the four of Aifric Keogh, Emily Hegarty, Eimear Lambe and Fiona Murtagh secured a bronze medal in the women's four final.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin also gave his reaction.
