Johnny Depp made a return to the public eye after being spotted at the opening night of this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Wearing a three piece black suit, the actor posed for photographs along the festival's red carpet ahead of the premiere screening of his film Jeanne Du Barry, which will see Depp star as King Louis XV, alongside French castmates Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe and Maiwenn.

Depp was greeted by an army of fans, with some holding banners reading, 'We Love Johnny', and 'Viva Johnny'.

Jeanne Du Barry sees Depp star as King Louis XV, who becomes attracted to a working class woman named Jeanne, who uses her feminine charms to climb the social ladder. The film is also directed by Maiwenn, and marks Depp's first movie project since his much publicised court case with his ex wife Amber Heard.

Depp sued Ms Heard over a publication which appeared in the Washington Post in 2018, accusing him of sexually and physically abusing her throughtout their marriage. The couple divorced in 2017 following two years of marriage.

Depp's appearance at the festival comes after one of France's best actors Adele Haenel, announced that she was quitting the industry, after blasting its "complacency toward sexual aggressors". Her claims were dismissed Thierry Fremaux, Cannes Film Festival chief.
