Ricky Gervais has explained why he turned down a season 4 of After Life.

The series came to an end after season 3, which saw Gervais' character Tony who was a local journalist, grieving for his late wife Lisa who died of cancer. She was played by Kerry Godliman.

With the help of his dog, Tony tries to face each day without his wife, as he reminisces on his past life.

While it was confirmed that season 3 would be the final straw, Ricky Gervais has now revealed that he turned down a series 4 of After Life. The comedian explained that he felt he was unable to take Tony's story any further.

"I’m going for something new. That feels very exciting. I’ll keep going for as long as I’m allowed", he said.

Thanking fans for their support, he added, "Thanks for all your beautiful tweets about #Afterlife and for recommending it to your friends. You've created a global phenomenon. It's really unbelievable to be honest. Most of all, thanks for supporting all the people who open up about grief. Best fans in the world".

Seasons 1-3 of After Life are available to watch on Netflix.
