A much-needed and eagerly anticipated new bridge across the river Shannon is set to officially open to the public today to link the twin towns of Killaloe, Co. Clare and Ballina, Co. Tipperary.
Huge crowds are expected to be in attendance for the opening of what will be known as the "Brian Boru Bridge", whose palace Kincora overlooked Lough Derg.
The 207 metre long bridge is part of an overall scheme which also includes the Killaloe bypass, and an upgrade of the regional road from Ballina to Birdhill.
The entire scheme is 6.2 kilometres and cost €88 million.
