The incident occurred at the Bank of Ireland at East Gate Village, Little Island around 1:30am this morning. The incident involved the use of an industrial telehandler.
According to reports in the Irish Examiner, the exterior of the building was damaged and the external ATM was removed and stolen.
This is the second ATM robbery in Cork in the last two weeks, the first one took place in Mallow at a Supervalu on June 1st. Reports have stated that a JCB vehicle was also used, however, they were unsuccessful with removing the ATM.
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told the Examiner that they are carrying out a technical examination of the scene. There has been no arrests made so far, and investigations are ongoing for both incidents, the spokesperson said.
The incident in Mallow resulted in tens of thousands in damage after a JCB was used for the theft. The supermarket's supervisor told the Examiner at the time that “the whole front of the shop is destroyed, and it will all have to be replaced, which you would expect would cost tens of thousands."
“We got a nasty shock when we saw the extent of the damage. They dumped the JCB outside the front, but they broke bollards when they rammed the place, and they’ll have to be replaced too," he continued.
