A part of one of the busiest roads in Cork is to close this weekend due to construction works.
It has been confirmed that almost 2km of the N28 will close as part of ongoing construction works on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway scheme. Diversions are to be in place from 8pm Friday evening to Monday morning at 5am, with a full road closure in place between Rochestown and Carrs Hill.
As a result, drivers have been urged to make plans in advance as this part of the road will be closed. Diversion routes will be in place with signage made visible to drivers. HGVs are to diverted on N40 (South Ring Road) and the N27 Airport Road.
Other local traffic will be diverted via the Rochestown and Carrigaline Road, and the Garryduff Road.
Such construction works include the installation of a temporary bridge at Maryborough Hill, with the old overbridge at Maryborough Hill set to be demolished and replaced with a new structure. "Short-duration closures" are set to have an impact on traffic at Maryborough Hill during the installation.
This temporary bridge will still allow for traffic to continue using the Maryborough Hill while the M28 roadworks take place.
Drivers have been urged to plan journeys in advance by the M28 Project Team, as the N28 at Carr's Hill is the main route between the city and Carrigaline, the Port and a number of several industrial and pharmaceutical plants at Ringaskiddy.
The team have also thanked motorists for their “continued patience and cooperation during these works", as per The Irish Sun.
This new motorway, worth €456 million will include two linked schemes: the 1.5 km Ringaskiddy Relief Road, and the 11km mainland motorway from the N40 Bloomfield Interchange to Barnahely. It is due to be completed by the summer of 2028.
