The motorcyclist involved in the collision that claimed the life of Garda Kevin Flatley last week has died in hospital, his wife confirmed.

Izzet Can Berber was suffered serious injuries in the crash at a speed checkpoint on the R132 at Lissenhall in Swords, north Dublin.

Garda Flatley became the 90th officer to die in the line of duty in Ireland when he was struck by the motorbike.

Berber had been in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital over the three weeks since the accident, but lost his battle last night.

His wife Caitríona shared the tragic news this morning.

"He passed away peacefully holding my hand on Saturday night," she said. "He was an amazing husband and even more amazing father to his son and two stepchildren.

"And we are [eternally] grateful to all our friends and family for the support over the last three weeks and also want to thank the doctors and nurses in ICU who did everything in their power to save him and support our family though his time there."

Garda Flatley's Funeral Mass was held in Balbriggan on 16 May before being brought to his final resting place in Newcastle. He was a veteran with 26 years of service.

The Church of St Peter and Paul was filled to capacity, and over a thousand people watched the Funeral Mass on large screens erected outside – this included hundreds of Garda colleagues from across Ireland.
