A woman in her 70s and a man in his 30s have died following a house fire in Connemara, County Galway early this morning.
The blaze broke out around 6am at a cottage near Casla, a village between Inverin and Carraroe. Emergency services, including three County Galway Fire Service units and crews from Galway City, responded to the scene.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána confirmed:
"At approximately 6:20am, Gardaí and Fire Services were alerted to a house fire at Gleann Mhic Mhuireann. The fire was brought under control and the bodies of a woman in her 70s and a man in his 30s were recovered from the property."
The bodies have been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway for postmortem examinations. The local coroner has been notified.
Gardaí say the cause of the fire will be determined following the postmortems and a technical examination of the scene.
