A man has been arrested in connection with the death of another man in Limerick City.
The victim in his 70s suffered a serious head injury during an assault in the Watergate area at about 11.30 last night.
He was rushed to University Hospital Limerick where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The man arrested, who in his 40s, is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and can be questioned for a total of 24 hours.
The scene of the incident has been preserved for a technical examination and a senior investigation officer has been appointed.
The Office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have both been notified. A post-mortem examination on the victim is due to take place later today.
