Man Dies Following Late-Night Assault in Limerick City

Gardaí in Limerick have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man in his 70s after an assault in the city on Thursday night.

The incident occurred at around 11:30pm on Watergate in Limerick city. The victim was taken to University Hospital Limerick with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead on Friday, 11th July.

A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the incident. He is currently being detained at a Garda station in Limerick under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The scene has been preserved for a technical and forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. The Office of the State Pathologist and the local Coroner have been notified, and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the case.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the Watergate area between 11:15pm and 12:00am on Thursday night, to come forward. They are also asking road users with camera footage, including dash-cam, from the area at that time to make it available to investigators.
