Water restrictions have been introduced in parts of Limerick as the demand for water rises in warm weather.

Uisce Éireann has urged its customers to conserve water as the recent heatwave has caused an increase in water use and supplies are being used much faster.

In a recent statement, Uisce Éireann said that raw water sources remain stable, however the level of demand is created an increase in pressure on the treatment process.

"This means treated water is being used more quickly than it can be produced and stored in local reservoirs. Periods of sustained high demand can lead to reduced pressure and, in some cases, interruptions to the availability of water for customers," they said in their statement.

In an attempt to tackle this issue, they are introducing nighttime restrictions to protect supplies for homes and businesses.

The places with restrictions include: Knocklong , Ballyagran, Coolcappagh, Castlemahon Newcastle and Dromcollogher and surrounding areas.

The restrictions will take place from 10.30pm until 6.30am.

Brian Harrington, Operations Manager, Uisce Éireann encouraged people in Limerick to support the new measures.

Nighttime restrictions are being implemented to support treated reservoir recovery and maintain daytime supply. Conserving water will help protect resources and maintain supply for all. When there is an increase in temperatures it leads to a rise in demand for water. Water is a hugely precious resource, and it is important to conserve water," Harrington said.

Uisce Éireann has recommended the following tips to support the measure and preserve water. They suggest:

  • Drop the hose, use a rose-head watering can and water plants early or late in the day to limit evaporation.
  • Take short showers instead of a bath.
  • Turn off the tap.
  • Fill up your appliances.
  • Fix dripping taps.
  • Use a basin in the sink.
  • Clean the car with a sponge.
  • Install a water butt.
  • Pick plants wisely.
  •  Lock in moisture.
