A live music gig in Brisbane turned into a moment of second-hand embarrassment this weekend when a fan’s planned marriage proposal during a performance by Australian duo Bootleg Rascal went spectacularly wrong — leaving both the would-be groom and the band red-faced.
Bootleg Rascal — a Gold Coast-based pair known for blending dubstep, hip-hop, reggae and indie influences — had just kicked off their tour at The Triffid when the unforgettable moment unfolded. As thousands of fans watched and recorded on their phones, a young man took to the stage mid-set with a microphone to declare his love and propose to his partner, Jamie.
“My partner and I came to watch Bootleg Rascal about two, three years ago,” he told the crowd. “I thought… they’re our favourite band, and I thought today, why not?” Seconds later, dressed in a white T-shirt and backward cap, he dropped to one knee — but the romantic gesture was instantly rebuffed. Jamie, clearly uncomfortable, shook her head and pulled him back up before quickly leaving the stage.
The man, still kneeling and visibly stunned, was then assisted off stage by an unexpected helper — someone dressed in a Scooby-Doo costume — prompting a mix of laughter and sympathy from the audience. Bootleg Rascal shared the clip on their social media, captioned “PDA gone wrong”, and made light of the awkwardness by plugging their breakup-themed single “Reasons” at the end of the footage. The duo joked that they might be “less keen on helping out with another public proposal for a while,” while also reminding fans that the tour will continue with dates across multiple Australian states.
The band — comprised of Carlos Lara and Jimmy Young — have cultivated a reputation for energetic shows and cheeky interaction with audiences. But even seasoned performers admit there are moments that can’t be prepared for. “I don’t think I have ever felt that awkward on stage in my life,” Lara wrote in the comments under the post, capturing how many fans felt watching the video.
