Harry Styles has reassured fans that he is not making a dramatic retirement announcement after sparking concern with comments about not knowing “what comes next.”
The former One Direction star addressed the rumours during the ninth night of his residency at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday.
Styles had fuelled speculation earlier this week after sending an email to fans in which he wrote that he “didn’t know what comes next.”
During his show, he took a moment to explain what he meant and said he simply wanted to be more open with fans about where he is in his life.
“I sort of just want to be honest about who I am and where I am in my life,” he told the crowd.

Styles explained that he did not want to reach the end of the tour and simply say “until next time” without acknowledging how special the current shows have been.
He reflected on his career, which began when he was just 16, and how he had always felt pressure to achieve more.
“Everything in my life has sort of taught me that everything in this world is about getting more and achieving more and more shows and bigger things and bigger... everything,” he said.
However, he said that experiences over the last few years had changed his outlook and that he was learning to be content with what is enough.
“I don't ever want these moments to ever feel less special because once they're done, they're sort of on to the next thing,” Styles said.
“These shows have been the joy of my life, they're so incredibly special to me.”
The singer said part of what makes the current shows feel different is knowing that moments like these do not last forever.
He also thanked fans for supporting him throughout his career and said he wanted to share his feelings with them rather than leave them guessing about his comments.
Styles was keen to stress that fans should not be worried.
“I'm not saying anything dramatic; I'm not trying to be dramatic; I'm just saying... don't worry,” he said.
“It's just.. I love you, and I wanted to speak to you like I would speak to my friends about this.”
He added that simply ending the tour with “until next time” did not feel like enough.

“I wanted to be open with you and share it with you because I think maybe all together we can acknowledge how nice it is to be in these rooms and have these moments,” he said.
“It's been a privilege and an honour. Thank you so much.”
Styles finished by telling fans that he loved them before introducing “Carla's Song”, which he said he had written for them.
His comments come after he emailed fans with a “message from Harry” earlier this week, revealing that he would be adding more cities after his current run of shows comes to an end.
This comes just days after Styles announced two huge Croke Park shows for next summer. He will perform at Croke Park on August 18 and 20, 2027 as part of his record-breaking Together, Together tour.
The newly announced dates are part of 25 additional shows across 12 cities in North America, Europe and the UK.
