Britney Spears could be on the verge of her first live performance in more than seven years after organisers of Rio de Janeiro’s annual free Copacabana Beach concert confirmed they are actively hoping to bring the pop icon back to the stage.

The event, which takes place every year on the famous beachfront in Brazil, has become one of the biggest live music spectacles in the world, attracting crowds that rival or exceed those of major global festivals. In recent years it has hosted record-breaking performances by Madonna and Lady Gaga, turning the concert into one of the most high-profile music stages on the planet.

When asked this week about ongoing rumours that Spears is being targeted as a future headliner, festival organisers did not dismiss the idea. Instead, they said: We still believe in it.” While no official deal has been announced, the comment has fuelled widespread speculation that talks or approaches may be taking place behind the scenes.

The scale of the event is one of the main reasons the story has gained so much attention. In 2025, Lady Gaga drew an estimated two million people to Copacabana Beach, setting a new all-time attendance record for the concert series. The previous year, Madonna performed to approximately 1.6 million fans, underlining how the free Rio show has become one of the largest single-artist live events in modern music history.

For Britney Spears, who has not performed live since October 2018, a return on a stage of that size would be both symbolic and unprecedented. Her last appearance came during her Piece of Me Tour in Texas, shortly before her long-running Las Vegas residency was cancelled and she stepped away from performing altogether.

In the years since, Spears has repeatedly expressed complicated feelings about her career in the music industry, particularly in the wake of her highly publicised conservatorship. After being freed from it in 2021, she said she had no immediate plans to return to the stage, telling fans she was wary of the pressures and control that had defined much of her professional life. At one point, she even said she did not want to perform again at all.

However, recent signs have led fans to believe her stance may be softening. This week, Parris Goebel, the award-winning choreographer who worked closely with Lady Gaga on her Copacabana performance, began following Spears on Instagram. While a follow alone does not confirm a collaboration, it immediately sparked online discussion that Goebel could be involved in a possible comeback performance.

Goebel is widely regarded as one of the most in-demand choreographers in pop music, known for helping artists stage large-scale, visually ambitious shows. Her involvement in Gaga’s record-breaking Rio performance has added weight to the idea that she could now be connected to a similarly historic project involving Spears.

A return at Copacabana would be a significant moment for the singer. Spears is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with a career spanning more than two decades and defining hits including …Baby One More Time, Toxic and Stronger. Despite this, she has not stood on a concert stage since 2018, making any confirmed live appearance a major cultural event.

At present, no date, contract or performance has been officially announced. But with Rio organisers publicly acknowledging their hopes, and with behind-the-scenes figures beginning to circle, the idea of Britney Spears returning to live performance — on one of the world’s biggest stages — is no longer being treated as impossible.
