Why Stevie Wonder Lost His Sight — And Why It Never Slowed Him Down

Stevie Wonder isn’t just a music icon. He’s a force of nature, a once-in-a-century genius who, despite being blind, rewrote what was possible for pop, soul, funk, and R&B. But there’s one thing most people still don’t know about the Motown prodigy: he wasn’t born blind.

Born Stevland Hardaway Morris on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan, Wonder arrived six weeks premature. In the 1950s, neonatal care wasn’t quite what it is today — and in Stevie’s case, the oxygen-rich incubator that was supposed to help him survive inadvertently caused a condition known as Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). It's a serious condition where blood vessels in the eyes develop abnormally, sometimes detaching the retina entirely. That’s what happened to Stevie. Six weeks old, and the lights went out for good.

But here’s the incredible part: they never really went out. Because by the age of five, he was already learning the harmonica. At eight, he was banging out beats on pots, pans, and anything else that would sit still. And by 12, Motown had seen enough. Berry Gordy signed him, and “Little Stevie Wonder” became a household name practically overnight.

From that point on, the narrative shifted. This wasn’t just about a blind child prodigy — it was about a master craftsman of sound, feel, and innovation. His first album The 12 Year Old Genius topped both the pop and R&B charts. Then came classics like Superstition, Sir Duke, Living for the City, and Isn’t She Lovely. The hits never stopped, and neither did he.

In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Stevie summed it up perfectly:

“I never thought of being blind as a disadvantage, and I never thought of being black as a disadvantage. I am what I am. I love me! … God has allowed me to take whatever it was that I had and to make something out of it.”

Even his jokes are gold. When he sat down with David Letterman in 2015, he flashed that cheeky grin and said:

“You can act like you don’t see nothing when you really do. You can say you didn’t see that when you did.”

It’s all classic Stevie. Fiercely gifted. Unshakably joyful. And totally unstoppable.
