The final day of the school term is usually an exciting time for students, teachers and parents as the summer holidays begin and the making of lunches is put on hold until September.

However, for eight primary schools across the country, when the bell goes this afternoon, they'll close their doors for good.

The eight schools are across the six counties of Kerry, Wexford, Louth, Galway, Donegal and Tipperary.

Each of the schools in question have between one and six pupils, with some having more staff than students.

The Department of Education says they will all close permanently this afternoon after agreement with their patron body, saying "any proposal to close a school involves consultation with all of the relevant stakeholders of the school community and follow decisions taken at local level."

The eight schools permanently closing this afternoon are listed below:

  • Stonetown National School, Co. Louth
  • Ballyfad National School, Co. Wexford
  • St. Patrick's National School, Co. Donegal
  • St. Joseph's National School, Co. Tipperary
  • Flemby National School, Co. Kerry
  • Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, Co. Kerry
  • Attymon National School, Co. Galway
  • Scoil Naomh Chuan, Co. Galway
