Four counties will remain under a status orange rain warning until two o'clock this afternoon.

Dublin, Louth, Meath and Wicklow will see persistent and heavy rain this Monday, with a chance of thunderstorms.

The warning was issued by Met Eireann last night, and is valid from 0000 on Monday morning to 1400 on Monday afternoon.

The forecaster is warning of widespread surface flooding, very difficult travelling conditions, and very poor visibility.

Motorists nationwide are being urged to slow down and take extra care on the roads.

Kildare and Monaghan meanwhile are under a status yellow rain warning, with spells of heavy rain leading to the possibility of localised flooding.

Met Eireann says areas not under the current warnings will escape heavy rain, but there's a chance of isolated showers over the coming hours.

Here's how tonight and tomorrow are looking weather-wise:

TONIGHT

Tonight it will become largely dry as any lingering rain in the northeast clears, leaving clear spells and isolated showers for the night. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in light west to northwest winds.

TOMORROW

Tomorrow morning will be dry for most with bright spells and isolated showers. More frequent showers will spread from the west through the morning and early afternoon, with cloud increasing also. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees in a light to moderate west to northwest breeze.
