Amazon has stopped selling an electric scooter on its Irish platform after it was found not to meet Irish legal requirements.

The move follows growing concerns about the safety of e-scooters and has prompted calls for other retailers to review the products they offer.

Current Irish regulations limit e-scooters used on public roads to a maximum design speed of 20 km/h, yet some models available online advertise speeds of up to 45 km/h. Riders must also be at least 16 years of age.

The issue has gained increased attention following several serious accidents involving e-scooters, including incidents in which children suffered traumatic brain injuries. According to Children's Health Ireland, injuries linked to e-scooter use among children and young people have increased by 50%.

Michael Murphy, Chair of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, praised Amazon for removing the product and confirmed that the retailer is reviewing the matter further. He also acknowledged that AliExpress has withdrawn a similar e-scooter from sale in Ireland.

However, Murphy said these actions do not go far enough, urging all retailers to stop selling e-scooters that fail to meet Irish safety standards. He highlighted concerns that some products are marketed to children, despite the legal age restrictions, and argued that consumer safety should take precedence over financial gain.

In response to the growing concerns, the government is examining the possibility of introducing tougher regulations, including a potential ban on e-scooters. A meeting involving the Taoiseach, Tánaiste Simon Harris, government ministers, and the Garda Commissioner has been scheduled for next week to discuss the issue further
