The founder of the Capuchin Day Centre, Brother Kevin Crowley, has died at the age of 90.

His death was announced on the Capuchin Franciscans' website this morning, with it stating his death occurred "in the wonderful care of Mount Desert Nursing Home in Cork."

Archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, has been leading the tributes to Brother Kevin this afternoon:

"Brother Kevin devoted his life to the service of the poor."

"His work with the Capuchin Day Centre staff and volunteers transformed the lives of the poor and marginalised in our city who availed of its services, from misery and despair to hope and love."

In a statement, President Michael D Higgins said:

"Through his support and respect for those most in need, Brother Kevin made an invaluable contribution to the people of Dublin City."

"Brother Kevin was a warm, caring, yet fearless man, who dedicated his life to living his Christian faith in dedication to those most in need."

He founded the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin City Centre in 1969, which has provided essential services to the homeless population of the capital for decades.

It offers hot meals, food parcels, clothing, showers, family services, and medical and dental services to the most vulnerable.

In 2018, while on a visit to Ireland, the late Pope Francis visited the centre, and spoke with Brother Kevin, those present and the team of volunteers who keep the centre going.

Through his ministry and life as a Capuchin Friar, Brother Kevin opened his heart and his hands to serve those most in need.

Friday, 4th July: Reposing in Church St all day Friday with solemn evening prayer at 6pm.
