Fuel Allowance payments are due to begin this week for more than 465,000 households across Ireland, with changes introduced this year allowing a greater number of people to qualify for the winter support.
The means-tested payment is designed to assist eligible households with heating costs over a 28-week period. Recipients can receive €38 per week or opt to receive the allowance in two instalments of €532.
The scheme has been expanded under Budget 2026, with people receiving Working Family Payment now able to qualify if they meet the relevant conditions. Almost 50,000 Working Family Payment recipients are currently eligible for Fuel Allowance.
A further change will apply from September 28, allowing people who move from Disability Allowance or Blind Pension into employment to retain their Fuel Allowance for up to five years, subject to the applicable rules.
Fuel Allowance is available through 22 qualifying social welfare schemes and is limited to one payment per household.
People aged 66 and over can also qualify without receiving a social welfare payment from the Department of Social Protection, provided they pass the relevant means test.
The Department estimates that more than 465,000 households, or approximately 26% of households nationwide, will qualify for the scheme this year.
Announcing the start of the Fuel Allowance season, Minister Calleary said the payment would provide important assistance to households facing increased heating costs during the winter.
“Fuel Allowance is a vital support for households facing higher heating costs over the winter months, and this week payments will begin for more than 465,000 households across the State.”
He said heating a home could put additional pressure on household finances, particularly during colder periods.
“For many households, the cost of keeping the home warm can place significant pressure on the weekly budget, particularly during the colder months. Fuel Allowance provides important financial support to help meet these costs and helps ensure that people can heat their homes with greater peace of mind.”
The Minister said the expansion announced in Budget 2026 was intended to extend the support to additional households.
“In Budget 2026, we expanded eligibility for the scheme so that more households can benefit from this support. This reflects our commitment to ensuring that those who need help with their energy costs can access it.”
He also urged people who believe they may meet the qualifying conditions to check their eligibility.
“I would encourage anyone who thinks they may qualify for Fuel Allowance to check their eligibility and make sure they are receiving the support available to them.”
