Katie Taylor was in Dublin today to launch HERstory, a two-part live experience that will tour theatres across Ireland in 2027, offering audiences a unique insight into the life and career of one of the country’s greatest sporting icons.
The show will combine a theatrical performance exploring Taylor’s journey from her childhood in Bray to the conclusion of her amateur boxing career in 2016, followed by a live on-stage interview with renowned boxing journalist, broadcaster and author Steve Bunce.
Directed by Andrew Flynn, Director of Theatre at Galway Arts Centre, and produced by Taylor’s manager Brian Peters, HERstory will explore the personal story behind the sporting legend, including her determination to make female boxing a reality and the challenges she overcame throughout her career.
The tour will open in May at Siamsa Tíre in Tralee before travelling to the Theatre Royal in Waterford, the National Opera House in Wexford and the Town Hall Theatre in Galway.
Further performances are scheduled for later in the year, including The Helix in Dublin on September 25 and TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar on October 2.
Speaking at the launch, Taylor said she was delighted to bring her story to theatres around the country after years of travelling the world to compete in the ring.
“It’s been such an incredible journey, but I was always focused on the next fight and the next challenge, so it’s really only since my fight in Croke Park that I’m starting to reflect on it all,” she said.
“I’m hoping these events will give people a new insight into my story and help to inspire a whole new generation.”
Peters said the production would tell the story of a girl from Bray who helped transform her sport and redefine what was possible for women in boxing.
He described the format as unique, with two different experiences taking place in one evening. The theatrical performance will offer a fresh perspective on Taylor’s early life, before audiences hear directly from the boxer during the live interview.
Flynn said developing a play about Taylor was an exciting challenge for the Irish theatre artists involved in the production.
He said the aim was to create a performance that was both funny and moving, bringing audiences into Taylor’s formative years and exploring the determination, ambition and obstacles that shaped her journey.
Tickets for the May performances are on sale now, with tickets for The Helix and TF Royal Theatre shows expected to go on sale later this week.
A limited number of platinum meet-and-greet tickets will also be available for each event.
