Sweethearts, the classic conversation heart brand, is leaning into the financial realities facing couples this Valentine’s Day with a new range of tongue-in-cheek messages reflecting modern romance in a cost-conscious era.

In research released by the brand ahead of 14 February, three-quarters of adults said they are seeking more affordable ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day, while eight in 10 respondents admitted the current economic climate is influencing their plans. Rising household bills and everyday expenses appear to be shaping not only how people date, but how they express affection.

In response, Sweethearts has unveiled a limited-edition collection titled “Love in This Economy”, featuring phrases such as “SPLIT RENT,” “SHARE LOGIN,” “CAR POOL,” “BUY N BULK” and “COOK FOR 2.” The messages nod to shared streaming passwords, joint grocery shops and other practical markers of modern relationships.

“Sweethearts has always evolved with the times by staying aware of current dating trends and relationships — and being practical is having a moment,” said Evan Brock, vice president of marketing for Spangler Candy Company, which produces the sweets. “That’s why some of the messages on our Sweethearts candies aren’t just about finding love the old-fashioned way this year.”

Online reaction has been swift, with some social media users describing the collection as the “economically aware pack,” while others joked that phrases such as “joint taxes” would be a fitting addition. A few commentators labelled the sweets a light-hearted “recession indicator”, reflecting the wider mood.

Despite financial pressures, confectionery remains central to Valentine’s celebrations. The survey found that 40% of people planning to mark the occasion intend to give sweets, ahead of cards (37%) and flowers (33%). Among millennials, sweets topped wish lists, while single respondents favoured confectionery over flowers.

In the UK and Ireland, the equivalent sweet is Love Hearts, produced by Swizzels. According to UK consumer polling ahead of Valentine’s Day, a majority of Britons are also planning to scale back spending, with many opting for home-cooked meals and smaller gifts instead of restaurant bookings. Yet Love Hearts remain a seasonal staple, with traditional messages such as “BE MINE,” “LOVE YOU,” “CUDDLE ME” and “ALWAYS” among the most popular.

The brand’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to balance sentimentality with humour. In recent years, Sweethearts has released limited editions reflecting contemporary dating culture, including “Situationship” boxes and Halloween-themed “Ghosted” sweets.

Whether proclaiming “I LOVE YOU” or suggesting “SPLIT RENT,” conversation hearts continue to capture the spirit of the times — sweet, simple and increasingly savvy about the cost of love.
