Man Charged After Drone Intercepted Near Portlaoise Prison

A man in his 30s is due before Tullamore District Court on Wednesday morning after a drone was intercepted near Portlaoise Prison.

Gardaí responded to a report at around 3pm on Tuesday concerning an alleged attempt to fly a drone into the prison campus in Co Laois.

Members of the Laois Drugs Unit and Laois Detective Unit attended the scene and intercepted the drone as it was being flown in close proximity to the prison.

The drone was seized, along with a package containing suspected cannabis, tablets and a number of mobile phones.

Two men were arrested in connection with the incident.

One of the men, aged in his 30s, has since been charged and is scheduled to appear before Tullamore District Court on Wednesday morning.

The second man, who is in his 40s, was released without charge. A file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí have not provided any further details about the alleged attempted delivery to the prison.
