Mayo has lifted the Sam Maguire for the first time in 75 years, officially breaking the curse.
The curse was said to have been placed on Mayo the last time their team won the All Ireland in 1951. It is rumoured that the curse was placed upon the team as their celebration back home after the match passed a funeral. The team are said to have not shown proper respect to the funeral. As a result a curse was placed upon the team that stated Mayo would not lift the Sam Maguire again until all the players of the previous winning team were dead.
Today the curse has finally been eradicated in a game for the ages.
Kerry started the match passionately scoring the first point almost immediately. They continued with their promising start scoring 3 points before Mayo had any.
The gap opened further when David Clifford scored a goal, for Kerry, in the first quarter of the match.
This goal proved to be the wake-up call Mayo needed. Both sides upped the pace of the game and were firing points in left right and centre.
Mayo couldn't quite catch up before half-time. Although the score of 1-8 to 0-10 to Kerry showed just how action packed the game had been.
The underdogs took over in the second half with 2 points and a goal scored by the 41st minute.
The Kerry players tried to settle the score. Unfortunately with their mind on the attack their defense seemed to fall to the wayside.
Kerry quickly recovered and closed the gap from Mayo 1-14 to Kerry 1-10, back to just a one point difference with Mayo 1-14 Kerry 1-13.
Unfortunately for the Kingdom Mayo showed off their kicking skill scoring 2-points at a time to put the back in the lead and in the lead for the final score of 1-20 to 1-17.
