A Ryanair passenger was nearly sucked out of a window of a flight after it "detached" mid air, it has been reported.

The man in question, who has been described as a tourist from Serbia, was on flight to Memmingen, Germany from Thessaloniki in Greece, and was taken to hospital, treated for friction burns. However, it was reported that he is in good condition.

It had been reported in Greek media that this incident took place over North Macedonia, and that the window was broken by a piece of debris which was detached from one of the plane's engines.

According to reports in RTÉ, one passenger said: "Most of us had fallen asleep, we had closed our eyes; there was a noise, like a tyre bursting".

"We immediately realised there had been a decompression", they continued. "There were screams ... for a moment I thought someone had accidentally opened the emergency door".

"The masks dropped and there was a strong smell; the head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window."

"Fortunately, he hadn't taken off his seat belt," she said.

She went on to add that other passengers near the man pulled him back in.

Ryanair have said in a statement that the flight had "returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window detached during the flight.

"The aircraft landed normally and the passengers returned to the terminal".

They added that a replacement aircraft was provided to transport the remaining passengers to Memmingen, Germany.
