A planned one-day strike at Bord na Móna Recycling has been called off after workers secured an improved offer during talks with the company, according to trade union SIPTU.
The industrial action, originally scheduled to protest uncertainties surrounding the proposed sale of the company, was halted following negotiations held in Portlaoise on Wednesday. SIPTU representatives said the revised offer includes enhanced terms for employees who may be affected by the potential privatisation of the recycling operation.
Adrian Kane, SIPTU Divisional Organiser, confirmed that the union’s Bord na Móna Recycling Shop Stewards unanimously supported the new proposal and will recommend it to members in a forthcoming ballot.
“While we have made major progress concerning industrial relations issues linked to the sale, serious concerns remain about the privatisation of this state asset and the broader direction of domestic waste services in Ireland,” Kane said.
The union is now calling for high-level discussions on the future of the waste sector. SIPTU has formally requested a meeting with Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy, Darragh O’Brien, to voice its members’ concerns and advocate for a publicly accountable and environmentally sustainable approach to waste management.
Bord na Móna has not yet commented publicly on the outcome of the talks. The ballot on the new offer is expected to take place in the coming days.
