Thousands of people took part in the annual Darkness Into Light 5km walks throughout the country.

Pieta's biggest fundraising event began at 4am this morning.

197 locations in Ireland and abroad took part in the annual fundraiser for Pieta, the suicide and self-harm prevention charity.

Community members set off from locations including GAA clubs, churches, and schools in the pre-dawn darkness, completing the 5km walk as the sun began to rise.

The annual fundraiser is seen as a crucial to provide vital services for Pieta who provide easily accessible, free-of-charge services online, by phone, or in person to people of all ages and backgrounds in distress or who have been bereaved through suicide.

Pieta and Electric Ireland are reminding people that donations can still be made online at www.darknessintolight.ie every donation will go towards Pieta’s therapy and support services for those impacted by suicide.

One of the biggest events to mark the major fundraiser took place in Phoenix Park in Dublin.

Proceeds from the event are used to support the charity’s services providing care for individuals and support for their families.

Last year, over €4 million was raised by Pieta House, who said that an estimated 100,000 helpline calls and texts were funded as a result.

The charity added that 51,489 counselling hours and 6,919 unique therapy journeys were also funded last year as a result of Darkness Into Light.
