Three Irish citizens have died and another has suffered serious injuries following a road traffic collision in southern Spain.

The crash occurred at around 2.30am yesterday on the A-7 motorway near Malaga. Emergency services were alerted after two vehicles collided on the busy coastal route.

According to local reports, the force of the collision caused one of the vehicles to leave the road and plunge down an embankment. Firefighters, police officers and medical personnel rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations.

Despite their efforts, two women and one man were pronounced dead at the scene. A second man who was travelling in the vehicle survived the collision but sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital for specialist treatment and remains under medical care.

The four individuals involved are believed to be from Mullingar, Co Westmeath. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, where many are awaiting further details about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Officers are examining the scene and gathering evidence to determine what led to the collision. No further information about the cause of the crash has been released at this stage.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is aware of the incident and is providing support to those affected.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance,” a spokesperson said.

As is standard practice, the department declined to comment further on the details of the individuals involved but confirmed it is assisting the families during what is an extremely difficult time.

The deaths mark a tragic loss for the victims’ families and friends, both in Ireland and in Spain. Support services are expected to be made available to relatives as they deal with the aftermath of the accident.

The A-7 motorway is one of the busiest roads in southern Spain, linking many towns and cities along the Costa del Sol. While emergency services responded quickly to the scene, the severity of the collision resulted in a significant loss of life.

Further updates are expected as Spanish investigators continue their inquiries and authorities work to establish the full circumstances of the crash. The families of those involved remain the immediate focus of support efforts by both Irish and Spanish officials.
