A reboot of beloved rom-com 13 Going on 30 is officially in the works at Netflix, with Logan Lerman and Emily Bader set to lead the new adaptation.

The original film, released in 2004, became a cult favourite thanks to its mix of fantasy, comedy and heartfelt storytelling.

It followed Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who, after a humiliating birthday party, wishes she could skip straight to adulthood — only to wake up as her 30-year-old self navigating life as a magazine editor in New York.

The role was made iconic by Jennifer Garner, who starred opposite Mark Ruffalo as her childhood best friend and eventual love interest, with Judy Greer playing her sharp-tongued frenemy Lucy.

Despite modest expectations at the time, the film went on to gross around $96 million worldwide and found lasting success on home release, eventually becoming a defining rom-com of the early 2000s.

From the iconic “Thriller” dance scene to the “thirty, flirty and thriving” catchphrase, it has remained firmly embedded in pop culture for over two decades.

The reboot will see Jennifer Garner return in a new role as executive producer, a move that has been welcomed by fans given her central role in the original’s success.

Directing duties will be handled by Brett Haley, who previously worked with Emily Bader on People We Meet on Vacation, a Netflix rom-com that proved a major hit — spending four weeks in the platform’s global Top 10 and charting in 92 countries.

In a statement, Haley described the original as “one of those rare, perfect films”, adding that stepping into the project comes with “tremendous responsibility.” He also highlighted the significance of Garner’s involvement and praised his new leads, calling Bader and Lerman “a magical pairing.”

Plot details for the reboot are being kept tightly under wraps, and it remains unclear whether the new film will directly retell Jenna’s story or introduce a fresh take on the concept. The script has been written by Hannah Marks, with revisions by Flora Greeson.

Both new leads bring strong credentials to the project.

Emily Bader has quickly become one of Netflix’s rising stars, with roles in My Lady Jane and upcoming sports drama The 99’ers, where she will portray football legend Mia Hamm.

Meanwhile, Logan Lerman — best known for the Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief franchise and The Perks of Being a Wallflower — continues to build a diverse career, with recent appearances in Only Murders in the Building and indie film Oh, Hi!.

The enduring popularity of 13 Going on 30 has made a reboot feel almost inevitable.

Over the years, cast members have repeatedly spoken about the film’s lasting impact, with Mark Ruffalo noting that it remains one of the projects fans mention to him most often, while Jennifer Garner has reflected on the experience as a defining moment in her career.

With a new generation of stars, a proven director, and the backing of Netflix, the reboot is already shaping up to reintroduce one of the most beloved rom-com stories to a whole new audience — while tapping into the nostalgia of those who grew up with the original.
