A sequel to the beloved 1987 classic Dirty Dancing is officially moving forward, with Lionsgate confirming that the long-anticipated follow-up is now in development.
Jennifer Grey is set to reprise her iconic role as Frances “Baby” Houseman, marking a return to one of the most recognizable characters in romantic film history. In addition to starring, Grey will also serve as an executive producer on the project, signalling her deep creative involvement in shaping the next chapter of the story.
The original Dirty Dancing starred Grey opposite the late Patrick Swayze and was set at Kellerman’s, a vacation resort in New York’s Catskills during the early 1960s. Beneath its wholesome, family-friendly exterior, the resort hid a vibrant underground dance scene. Baby, initially a sheltered and idealistic young woman, was drawn into this secret world and became the dance partner of charismatic instructor Johnny Castle. Over the course of one unforgettable summer, the two fell in love, culminating in a finale that has become one of the most iconic moments in cinema history.
The sequel will be penned by Kim Rosenstock, best known for her work on Dying For Sex. Production is expected to begin later this year, with the film reportedly targeting a 2027 theatrical release. The timing is intentional, aligning with the 40th anniversary of the original movie. Producing duties will be handled by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, the team behind major hits such as The Hunger Games franchise and Crazy Rich Asians.
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, emphasized the care being taken with the project. In a statement, he said that Dirty Dancing remains just as beloved today as it was upon its release, and that assembling the right creative team was essential for fans to embrace a return to Kellerman’s. He added that the studio is committed to delivering a theatrical experience that captures the magic, music, and emotion that defined the original.
Jennifer Grey also shared her excitement about revisiting Baby decades later. She described the role as holding a deeply meaningful place in her heart and in the hearts of fans worldwide. Grey noted that she has long wondered what Baby’s life might look like years after that transformative summer, and expressed confidence that the team now in place can honour the legacy of the original film while bringing something new to audiences.
