‘A Minecraft Movie’ is now the highest grossing film this year in Ireland and the UK.

After just four weeks on release, the film has made £51.7 million at the combined box office in Ireland and the UK.

The hugely successful adventure comedy, based off of the most popular video game of all time, overtook the 2025's 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ which had earned £46.3 million after 11 weeks in cinemas.

'A Minecraft Movie' follows four misfits as they are pulled through a portal into the cubic world of Minecraft. Together with the help of Steve, played by Jack Black, the group embarks on a quest to return back to the real world.

The upcoming May bank holiday is likely to give 'A Minecraft Movie' another huge boost as children and adults alike flock to the cinema. This could mean that ‘A Minecraft Movie’ might overtake ‘Wicked', last years highest grossing film that earned £59.6 million.

The movie drew some interesting controversy as it became an internet trend for kids to go wild during a scene where Jack Black's character says the word “Chicken Jockey”, in reference to a zombie riding a chicken, a rare occurrence in the original video game.

Cinemas around the world have had to ask kids to refrain from screaming, jumping out of seats and throwing popcorn in response.

Last week, a song Jack Black's Steve sings in the film called 'Lava Chicken' climbed to number 30 in the Irish singles charts. The song became the shortest song ever to enter the singles charts being only 34 seconds long.

According to Warner Bros., The US opening at the box office for A Minecraft Movie earlier in April made it the biggest of the year with opening weekend sales of $163m (€143m)

Box office figures for Ireland and the UK are usually combined by international film companies into a single market. All box office figures have been published by the British Film Institute using data from the media analytics company Comscore.
