Barry Keoghan has explained how online abuse has made him take a step back from public life, even leaving him not wanting to go outside.

The Irish actor made these comments in a recent interview with Sirius XM, where he revealed that the level of abuse which has been aimed in his direction online has gone beyond what he can just turn a blind eye to.

The actor went on to add that it has made him "shy away", saying that it has pushed him away and more reluctant to attend public events.

"I say this being absolutely pure and honest to you," he said. "It’s becoming a problem".

While he has largely removed himself from social media, Keoghan said that he still occasionally checks this online reaction, which he has described as "not nice", claiming that all this negativity has affected him both personally and professionally.

According to Keoghan, these anxieties have started to  "leak into your art", as it can take the enjoyment out of being on screen for him. He also shared his concerns that his son Brando may read these abusive comments one day when he is older.

Despite these issues, Barry Keoghan has been very busy at present. Along with starring alongside Cillian Murphy in the Peaky Blinders spin off movie, Immortal Man, the Dubliner is to also star in Sam Mendes' upcoming biopics about the Beatles.

Keoghan, who will play Ringo Starr in these films, has recently called his fellow co stars from the biopics as his "brothers".

In a previous interview with Sirius XM, Keoghan said: “It’s going to be an event and you know and we knew that coming on board” he said. “What an exciting event to be part of, and no better filmmaker to do it than Sam, you know, so I’m having an absolute f****** brilliant time and elevating my craft and, you know, making brothers as well on set".
